You have a hierarchy of habits you cannot afford to ignore.

The SpoonFed Ideas Newsletter

Every Sunday, I promise to give you three things.

  • One idea.
  • One action.
  • One update.

All to supercharge your life and help you make use of the short time you have here.

the idea.

There’s a hierarchy of habits in all of our lives. Bottom of this pyramid is all this life stuff... things you have to do to keep the lights on. It’s foundational and inescapable, and sometimes downright annoying. Hence why it’s at the bottom of this pyramid... because it’s also just the bare minimum.

These are non-negotiable if you want to be a functioning human being. Stuff like cleaning, cooking, wiping your butt and brushing your teeth. They don’t make you extraordinary, but without them, you’d pretty much look like, and most importantly, smell like... a homeless guy.

Because a lifetime of discipline and habits of doing just the bottom of your pyramid gets you very little lifetime mileage in the Do Cool Shit Department. If you want to get far in the road of life, your habits must build towards something.

This is the concept of habit stackability. Like Lego bricks, they must fit together and be part of a superstructure you build towards. Like the Millennium Falcon or this lego aircraft carrier.

By the way, trying to find an epic lego picture, I just went down a rabbit hole of amazing lego creations. There is some epic shit out there.

This is the concept of a skill tree. I always loved games with skill trees. A tiny flame you squirt out of your pinky becomes a fireball, which becomes a fire blast. You knew you were going to level up as long as you put in the time, the energy and the practice. I don't know about you, but being on a journey like that where you're constantly looking forward to unlocking something? Now that's exciting.

It was like I was a pokemon and I couldn't wait to lose tail whip and learn scratch. That’s what makes life interesting and worthwhile right? I love being able to beat up other cute little woodland creatures.

The hierarchy of habits actually has 3 levels.

  • Level 1 are maintenance habits.
  • Level 2 are standard habits.
  • Level 3 are what I call invisible habits, the most powerful god-tier level of habits possible.

To learn more about this concept, I encourage you to become a patreon member or join my substack. Full video and article published there, respectively.

the action.

Take out a piece of paper and write down the number of habits you have. Write them all down, literally. Categorize them. What habits are maintaining the status quo for you vs what habits are pushing you to grow? What habits are holding you back? This is the most basic study of yourself you could do. Because if you don't know what your good and bad habits are, then you won't be able to do anything about them... nor can you build god-tier level habits either.

the update.

So, I'm on a journey right now to get to 1000 pushups a day. I'm been trying to do this for the last month or so and the other day, I got the closest I've ever gotten. 760!!!! I don't think I've ever done this many pushups in my life. Arm is sore, pecs are bulging... didn't think this was going to be so hard but then again, I may be an idiot too. Either way, I bring this up because one, it's a future video idea I am planning on doing and two, always having some sort of tangible goal you feel like you're making progress towards is the key to fueling your inner fire. I mean, why not treat your life like it's some big pokemon game? There's an imagined pushup meter in the background of my life that I'm trying to fill up. I keep track of it on my phone and when I finally hit that fabled 1000 mark, I'm sure some new power-up is going to be unlocked. I just hope it's not tail whip cause that move honestly sucks.
